Effect of aluminum content on stress corrosion cracking of AM60B and AZ91D magnesium alloy ingots

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) of magnesium alloys is commonly observed in corrosve environments such as NaCl solutions. In this paper, the effect aluminum content on SCC alloy ingots, AM60B and AZ91D, evaluated using Slow Strain Rate Testing (SSRT) two environments: (1) air (2) 5%NaCl solution controlled from pH10 to pH11 with Mg (OH)2. The result shows that less susceptible than AZ91D. AZ91D specimens, accelerated corrosion around Mg17Al12 compounds microstructures adjacent fracture surface. To investigate relationship between susceptibility SCC, heat treatment was applied solution-treated specimen showed same as-cast ingot. However, at peak-age condition, a 22% higher Consequently, Mg-Al tested solution, found depend amount their compounds.
